How Niger Gov Babangida Aliyu Teamed Up With Gov. “Judas” Rotimi Amaechi To Dethrone Jonathan
Just as the dust raised by the brouhaha that took place recently in the leadership of the Nigeria’s Governor’s Forum (NGF) where the present chairman who is also the governor of Rivers State, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi was asked to step down for the governor of Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Godswill Akpabio is yet to settle, another development just came up and the person at the centre of the controversy this time is no other person than the governor that refers to himself as ‘The Servant Leader’, Alhaji Babangida Aliyu of Niger State.
You will recall that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members of the NGF loyal to the president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan have alleged that Amaechi is doing everything humanly possible to frustrate the second term bid of Mr. President. These governors who are the president’s loyalists decided to remove Amaechi and install another member who is loyal to the president. The name of Akpabio came handy based on his close relationship with the president and the governors have since then been doing all within their reach to see that Akpabio emerges the leader of the NGF.
And to further clip the wing of the anti-Jonathan’s group, at a meeting with the president in attendance, Akpabio was unanimously elected as the chairman of Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum. To show that he meant business, shortly after his election he came out publicly and declared that Judas governors would be weeded out among the PDP governors apparently referring to Amaechi and his co-travellers.
The interest of Rotimi in frustrating Jonathan’s 2nd term bid, Global News gathered, is as a result of his own political interest of being the presidential running mate of Jigawa state governor, Sule Lamido in the next general elections.
Meanwhile, the intelligence report indicates that a prominent member of the NGF in the person of Babangida Aliyu has decided to share in Amaechi’s plight. Meetings are said to have been called and held by some anti-Jonathan NGF members and other politicians across the country in the instance of Aliyu. At these meetings, different measures that can be put in place to displace Jonathan were said to be discussed.
The intelligence report reveals further that the only problem confronting this anti-Jonathan re-election group is money. It is generally believed that the Presidency has the financial muscle to release enough money to win the presidential election so they need a governor who has enough money to put into the election. That is why Amaechi was said to have been picked from the oil-rich Niger Delta and positioned for the post of the vice-president while the group carefully shops for who will fit the presidency slot among the anti-Jonathan NGF members and Lamido’s name came up.
What was, however, not clear as at the time of putting together this report is if Aliyu is actually supporting the Northern presidential ticket which Lamido is being positioned for or he has his personal ambition. Stay glued to this magazine for updates as events unfold.
