SERAP Tells Atiku, Tinubu, Obi, and Others to Publish Their Assets

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged presidential candidates in the next elections to make their holdings and liabilities public as soon as possible. It also urged candidates to openly commit to rejecting vote-buying and electoral bribery before and during the elections in an open letter to the candidates.   “While there is no constitutional requirement for presidential candidates to publish their assets and liabilities prior to elections, doing so would demonstrate that you can stand up for transparency in asset declaration by public officers if elected,” SERAP wrote in a letter dated June 11 and signed by Kolawole Oluwadare, its deputy director. “It is a public trust to hold a public office.” As a result, voters have a right to know what presidential candidates will do if elected on issues of public concern, notably in terms of integrity, selflessness, openness, accountability, human rights, and the rule of law. “As you and your parties…

Oni Bemoans Political Thugs Infiltrating Ekiti

Mr Segun Oni, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ekiti State, bemoaned the spate of attacks on his supporters in the days leading up to the June 18 election, saying thugs are gradually taking over the political space and attacking perceived opponents. Oni claimed that in the recent few days, many of his followers had been macheted or assaulted by political thugs, claiming that this was proof of the prior warning that thugs had been imported to the state for the upcoming governorship election. This was revealed in a statement released yesterday by Jackson Adebayo, the Segun Oni Campaign Organisation’s Media and Publicity Director, who said the relentless attacks on chieftains and members of the Ekiti SDP were becoming untenable. Oni also revealed that four of his members were attacked during a campaign rally in Itaji and Egbe Ekiti, in the Oye and Gbonyin Local Government Areas of Ekiti State, and are now being treated in two different hospitals. Former governor of the state, Oni, said he was not shocked by the “upsurge in violent attacks by political actors.”  We’ve previously sounded the alert, and state agents are now carrying it out. “The fact that all of the attacks are purportedly carried out by thugs supported by a political party intimidated by another political party is no longer a secret. “On June 8 and 9, APC thugs stationed in the Ilejemeje local government areas, also known as the Mayegun boys, accosted Chief Segun Akinwumi, an SDP chieftain, threatening to destroy his car and house unless the traditional rulers in the region intervened. This occurred on the 8th, just…
