A yet-to-be-identified cyclist lost his life after colliding with a truck along the Ikeja area of Lagos State on Sunday.
This was disclosed in a statement by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, on Sunday.
The statement disclosed that the cyclist lost control due to a lack of concentration while attempting to manoeuvre his way along the Alausa Bus stop to connect to Radio Road, leading to a collision with the truck.
The impact of the collision, Taofiq disclosed, caused the cyclist to hit his head on the pavement, causing his instant death.
He said, “Preliminary investigations indicate that the cyclist, while attempting a manoeuvre from Kudirat Abiola Way towards ‘Radio’ along Obafemi Awolowo Way, collided with the moving truck. In the process, he tragically lost control, struck his head violently against the pavement, and succumbed to fatal injuries instantaneously.
“Eyewitness accounts suggest that the cyclist was engaged in a phone conversation using an earpiece at the time of the incident, resulting in a fatal lapse in concentration on the busy expressway.
“LASTMA operatives promptly arrived at the scene, efficiently securing the area to safeguard other road users and to maintain seamless traffic flow. Officers from the Alausa Police Division were immediately notified and responded accordingly.”
He noted that the body of the deceased was handed over to the police and subsequently moved to the Ikeja General Hospital morgue.
The LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, while reacting to the incident, condoled the family of the deceased.
He urged road users, especially cyclists, to be safety conscious while on the highway.
“Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this profoundly difficult time. We earnestly urge all cyclists to prioritise their safety and that of fellow road users by remaining fully alert and suitably equipped at all times while traversing public roads,” Bakare-Oki said.
